The Incendo Short 9" Men’s is a lightweight hiking short that weighs 114 g and is cut from Fortius Air 50 nylon, with a regular fit, a 9" inseam, two open hand pockets and an internal mesh pocket. It carries a UPF 40 rating and an FC0 DWR finish that repels moisture, which suits hot, sunny walks. Add a long-sleeve hiking shirt and a hiking cap to keep the sun off the rest of you.
Walking Shorts for Scrub, Rock and Scrambles
The Gamma SL Short 9" Men’s is a softshell hiking short in Fortius DW 1.0 double-weave fabric, with articulated patterning for mobility. It has a UPF 50+ rating, a zippered thigh pocket that works with a harness and two zippered hand pockets, and it sheds light rain and wind. At 195 g, it is our most breathable, lightest weather-ready hiking short with a 9" inseam, and it is designed for climbing, hiking and trail use.

Fast-and-light hiking shorts use less fabric. The Norvan Short 5" Men’s is a trail running and hiking short made from recycled Diem polyester, weighs 70 g and has a zippered centre-back pocket for gels and small essentials. Is a 9" or 5" inseam better for men's hiking shorts?
A 9" hiking short covers more of the thigh, which helps against scrub and sun and suits slower, rougher walking. The Incendo Short and Gamma SL Short both have a 9" inseam. A 5" hiking short such as the Norvan Short suits fast, hot trails where low weight and freedom of movement come first. Try either with a pack on and lift your knee to hip height before you decide.
Are Arc'teryx hiking shorts water resistant?
Hiking shorts such as the Incendo, Gamma SL and Norvan use an FC0 DWR finish that repels moisture, and the Gamma SL sheds light rain and wind. None of them is a waterproof short, so for sustained rain carry waterproof hiking pants in your pack.
Do hiking shorts offer sun protection?
Some hiking shorts do. The Gamma SL Short has a UPF 50+ rating and the Incendo Short has UPF 40, and both protect only the areas the fabric covers. The Norvan shorts do not list a UPF rating, so check the product page, and use sunscreen on exposed legs.
What should I wear with hiking shorts on a cold morning?
Hiking shorts work well from a cool start because your legs warm up quickly once you are moving. Start with a hiking fleece over your shorts and shirt, then take it off as the climb warms you up.
